Marc always says, ‘I’m not cool, I’m a nerd, blah blah blah,’ People are always saying that about us, too, about Sonic Youth, that my daughter is so lucky to have such a cool mom, but that’s always the last way that I feel. It’s very hard to really be authentic or make deep creative products if your foremost thing is being really cool. You have to have a full range of emotion, and Marc has that.”

Yep yeppy yep. It’s like most designers’ interpretation of “punk”-black, studs, leather, ripped stuff, etc. The thing is that punk is usually defined as anti-establishment, but this black stud thing is so trendy it’s slowly BECOME the sort of “establishment,” or at least what is accepted by magazines, many bloggers, etc. Vivienne Westwood, the mother of punk, stopped using all that stuff decades ago. She’s always subversive in other ways that are more creative..and that’s a bit more “punk” isn’t it? Does this even make sense? I just mean a designer that’s actually subversive wouldn’t use an electric guitar in their ads for the sake of being subversive, like Kim Gordon is talking about. Ugh. I am so tired. So. tired.

“kids are so dumb nowadays!” until one actually comes along that is maybe a decent writer and makes references to different movies etc. because there is a very accessible well of information called The Internet. Then it’s “she’s supposed to be playing with Barbies, just like any normal thirteen year old!” or “she’s supposed to be doing drugs and ditching class, just like any normal thirteen year old!” For me, reviewing runway shows IS acting my age, and it’s possible to do that and also go out for pizza or a movie with my friends. I will never grow up in the sense that I will always love little things, fun things, things that don’t matter but really do. I’ll always have weird knick knacks on my shelves and make mini furniture to arrange a dollhouse out of in my art classes. I’ll always keep an open mind and try to find something interesting about everything I see.
